Naturalmat | The Ultimate Comparison Guide
We are often asked about the value for money you get with a Naturalmat mattress and how our mattresses compare. This guide should give you all the information you need to make an educated decision.
The idea for the Naturalmat Devon based company was born when two enthusiastic sailors became frustrated by the low-quality synthetic mattresses found on boats, so they decided there must be an alternative that would provide them with a more enjoyable night’s sleep. This calling to produce the perfect sleeping climate led Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall to explore the benefits of utilising natural fibres in mattresses. Because nobody was making natural fibre mattresses for the marine market, Mark and Peter saw an opening to set up a business, so Naturalmat was founded in 2000.
Naturalmat gives their customers extra reassurance regarding the quality of their mattresses by saying that every product that leaves the factory has been made by hand in their factory in Topsham.
Handmade mattresses are built, tufted, and stitched entirely by the hands of skilled craftsmen. From the images on the Nautralmat website, it’s nice to see they are hand-tufting the mattresses. Still, the border panels are machine side stitched, which means there is no connection between the pocket spring unit and the sides, leaving little edge to edge support (non-spring mattresses cannot be hand-stitched). We hand side stitch all of our mattress range to prevent bulging and give our mattresses edge support and a luxury look.
Looking at the Naturalmat website, their pocket spring mattresses are constructed in a very similar fashion to most mid-range mattresses. So, let’s have a look to see what’s inside.

Naturalmat mattresses are not cheap, and range for a kingsize from £1270 to £2750, but are their mattresses worth the price? The rule of thumb is the higher the spring count, the longer the life span of the mattress and the more comfort and support you will receive. Unfortunately, Naturalmat doesn’t advertise how many springs they use in their mattresses, but the problem lies with spring type. Naturalmat uses a calico pocket spring unit that is hand nested and tied together using t, making them highly unstable as the string can easily tear, leading to dips and sags in your mattress. Also, seeing that Naturalmat beds only offer a 5 year guarantee is a cause for concern and likely because the mattress will not be durable. In our opinion, this is due to either calico springs or lack of gsm of natural fillings or both. Calico springs will raise the price of the mattress significantly. Still, they bring no additional support, comfort or durability. So in our opinion, even though Naturalmat reviews are predominantly positive, we believe for a machine-stitched and likely low GSM natural upholstery filled mattress, the Naturalmat prices are too high.
There’s a lot to think about when purchasing a luxury mattress as there is a high cost involved. Even if a company has excellent ratings, which is the case with Naturalmat mattress reviews, you still need to make sure you’re not paying too much for something that may not last that long. First, you must ensure you investigate the GSM of the mattress you will buy is above 4000gsm and the minimum spring count is 1500.
We suggest you stay away from calico pocket springs. All you are doing is spending more for a spring unit that brings no extra support or comfort; instead, it significantly reduces the mattress’s lifespan.
