Organic Mattress UK
Finding a quality organic mattress UK can be complex, but a great night's sleep shouldn't be difficult. We spend a third of our lives in bed sleeping, yet the standard mattress contains a cocktail of flame retardants and chemicals.
In 2021, buyers have more choices. A new variety of organic mattress brands are shaking things up by providing better options for their customers and the environment. Winstons Beds meets the following criteria:
- NATURAL & ORGANIC | Each of these organic mattresses use a range of non-toxic and healthy materials, including organic cotton, natural latex, organic wool, organic alpaca and organic bamboo. No mattress contains toxic chemicals or harsh flame retardants.
- GIVE BACK & ECO-FRIENDLY | Each mattress applies eco-friendly production methods. All are made right here in the UK, reducing their environmental footprint by keeping production locally. We also give back to our communities by donating 2.5% to together for short lives.
- DIRECT | The direct to customer model allows us to balance costs by cutting out the middle person, keeping production in house, and selling directly to the customer online is the very reason we can offer you the most luxurious mattresses in the world at such low prices compared to our competitors. We are innovating greener mattresses so you can have a healthy and great night's sleep.
And, of course-comfort is key. Each of our mattresses have only received 5-star reviews for high-quality comfort and better sleep.
Why organic mattresses are important?
Here are the facts:
The leading chemical that is causing the most concern in mattresses are fire retardants. Multiple fire retardant chemicals are closely connected to herbicides and pesticides.
The chemicals are divided into two main classes:
- Chlorinated and Organophosphates (this group includes TRIS or TCPP)
- Brominated (this group contains DecaBDE)
These substances can also be blended with Antimony Trioxide when utilised on mattress cover fabrics.
- Numerous flame retardant chemicals are endocrine-disrupting chemicals. They penetrate the body as they are carried in dust form that can be digested or inhaled. The dust is produced when the cover fabric back-coating breaks down and is segregated from the fabric.
- Large quantities of certain chemicals are used in foam, breaking down over time and releasing the chemicals. Therefore, a 40-kilo foam mattress could contain over 7 kilos of flame retardant chemicals.
- Why does any of this matter? Most people sleep in little to no clothing, so skin permeability on connection with a mattress that has such chemicals will be a problem, and, with your face so close, the chemical dust is also a problem.
- The UK is increasing their use of flame retardants, even though the UK already used more chemicals in their domestic furniture than any other country applied to mattress covers and fillings.
- When chemicals are limited or banned due to health concerns, the chemical manufacturing industry will request a sunset date, meaning they can still use the chemicals for up to 5 years after the restriction date and the mattresses sold are never recalled.
- No UK law states that chemical additives must be listed on your mattress but here at Winstons Beds, we are very transparent and tell you exactly what goes into your mattress.
So how do you buy a chemical-free mattress?
- Always be sure there are no chemicals on the mattress cover. If manufacturers or retailers avoid the question, ask them how they passed the BS7177 fire regulations. If wool is being utilised, make sure it's pure wool.
- Make sure there is no memory foam in the mattresses. The foam must pass CRIB5 and be treated with chemical flame retardants.
- Make sure spray adhesives are not used in the construction of the mattress.
- Ask the retailer or manufacturer and command an accurate answer.
Organic mattresses Vs Traditional mattresses
Today, a significant percentage of traditional mattresses in British homes comprises foam and polyester and are treated with flame retardants. They are also sometimes wrapped in flame-resistant fibres like polyvinylidene chlorideand melamine. But, unfortunately, those substances aren't really what you want on your skin for 6-8 hours a day.
Our plush organic mattresses are manufactured by combining natural and non-toxic materials like wool, cotton, alpaca, horsehair, mohair, bamboo, and latex. As a result, organic mattresses do not contain the harsh chemicals that traditional mattresses have. Instead, natural fibres like cotton and wool, which are the most common sources of mattress upholstery, are processed without dangerous chemical products or toxic substances.
What are the benefits of organic mattresses?
We all know the chemicals in mattresses are causing health problems for us and that organic mattresses are much better for our health and the environment. But do organic mattresses really offer that much more? The short answer is YES!
Materials
- Organic mattresses are made from natural ingredients like wool, alpaca, mohair, horsehair cotton, and other natural fibres. They don't contain synthetic materials, so they're healthier for us than those filled with synthetic fillings.
Chemical-Free
- At times chemicals are added to make the softest organic mattress. Still, these chemicals are not harmless, as many studies show they can cause many health problems. So you can picture how dismayed many customers are when they find out that the ''organic mattress cover'' or ''organic mattress topper'' they are sleeping on contains chemicals. At Winstons Beds, our organic mattresses utilise no harmful chemicals and are all toxin-free.
Support
- Our organic mattresses will provide better support than you would get from a regular mattress and will contour to your body instead of making you adjust to the mattress. If you are looking for a mattress for a side sleeper, then try our certified organic latex mattress, which is the world's best spec luxury hybrid mattress and perfect for when you have sore joints, aches and pains or bursitis and want to remain as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
Anti Allergy
- Organic mattresses will not invite or harbour bacteria and other allergens. This is because the mattress does not absorb moisture, making it healthy to sleep on and less likely to mould or form allergens.
