How to Clean a Mattress

Let’s be honest – cleaning your mattress is rarely at the top of your list of house chores. But if you consider that you spend around seven or eight hours on it every night, it is easy to see how important it is to give it a good clean from time to time.

As you stretch and toss and turn in bed, things such as dust, sweat, dead skin cells, and oil from your body can make their way onto your mattress. And if you don’t keep an eye on your mattress’ condition on a regular basis, in the long run, it might get yellow stains which are tricky to eliminate.

But how do you go about cleaning your mattress?

How to clean your mattress

First things first, make sure to prepare your materials.

You will likely need a vacuum cleaner, baking soda, mild detergent, a spray bottle, a sponge or clean cloth, and – if you wish – a mattress protector.

Once you have all the right equipment, you can get cleaning.

Whether you have a double mattress or a king size mattress, these are the steps you should take:

  • Strip the bed – Remove all your bedding, including the duvet, blankets, sheets, mattress protector, and pillowcases. Throw everything in the washing machine and check for any stains on the mattress.
  • Gently vacuum the surface – Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to gently hoover the surface of your mattress. This way, you’ll be able to get rid of any dust, dirt, or other debris that has accumulated on it over time.
  • Apply baking soda to the mattress – Sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface of the mattress. Baking soda can act as a natural deodoriser, meaning that it will help absorb and remove any odour from the mattress.

Let it sit for about 30 minutes to one hour. After that, vacuum the surface again to get rid of the baking soda.

  • Mix and spray the cleaning solution – At this point, create a mixture of mild detergent (or washing up liquid) and water. Apply it to the mattress, ensuring you get into all the crannies and nooks.

Then, use a sponge or clean cloth to wipe down the mattress. Wipe in a circular motion to remove any residual dirt or debris more effectively.

  • Let the mattress dry – It is time now for the mattress to rest! Leave it to dry completely – this could take several hours.
  • Put the bedding back on – Once it is dry, you can put all the bedding back on. Before you start, consider flipping or rotating your mattress (if it is designed to do so), as it can help prolong its lifespan. And if you have a mattress protector, don’t forget to pop it back on, too – it will shield your mattress from future dust mites, stains, and spills.

How to get blood stains out of your mattress

If you happen to wake up with a nosebleed, don’t worry. See to yourself first, and then take care of your mattress.

An effective way to remove blood stains from your mattress is to dab at them with cold water. That said, don’t soak the mattress or rub the stain, as this might push the blood deeper, making it more difficult to get rid of.

If this technique has not done the trick, try adding a bit of baking soda to the water. Apply it to the stain, let it rest for 30 minutes or so, and dab it again with cold water.

If you’ve still had no luck, try the following method that is used to eliminate urine stains from your mattress.

How to get urine out of your mattress

If you have kids, you will know they are prone to accidents during the night. But don’t panic – your single mattress can be saved if you adopt this technique!

Dilute washing-up liquid in water and dab at the urine stain with a sponge or clean cloth. Most mattresses are not waterproof, so make sure to clean steadily.

If the stain hasn’t disappeared completely, and if the care label says it is fine, you can use an upholstery cleaner.

If you have a Winstons Beds mattress and are unsure what you can and cannot do, don’t hesitate to contact us. We will offer all the guidance you need to ensure your mattress is always in tip-top shape!
