Unlike many other premium quality natural materials, a horsehair mattress doesn’t absorb any water and is naturally durable.

Horsehair and horsetail are alike in their makeup, but they should not be mistaken for the same product. Horsetail is a longer, more robust, springier and significantly more superior product, which is why it is much more expensive than horsehair.
Though horsehair has similar properties, horsetail does it better. At Winstons, we only use the finest UK-sourced horsetail, which comes in loose fibres that we carefully hand tease into your mattress instead of using cheaper rolled horsehair pads.
We first prepare the raw material into a rope to manufacture the highest quality horsehair mattress. The horsehair comes in hollow strands that are loose, long and thick fibres—the longer and thicker the raw material, the greater the quality.
First, the horsehair is cleaned and passed through an electromagnetic process to eliminate impurities. The horsehair is then manually fed through the hopper. The hopper allows a fixed amount of air to feed the fibres equally, where they begin to open up and form into a rope.
The second phase begins with us spinning the rope to achieve the maximum amount of twists and curls to give more spring to the horsehair and, ultimately, the mattress.
Finally, we must give the rope memory to keep these twists, curls and springs constant. To do this, we heat the rope to change the structure of the horsehair for it to retain its spring once we open it back up. It is now ready to be used in our horsehair mattresses.
A horsehair natural fibre mattress is very durable, with some traditional horsehair mattresses lasting up to 100 years.
