Why choose a horsehair mattress?
Horsehair, unlike many other natural materials, doesn't absorb any water. Our horsehair mattresses will wick the moisture away from the mattress, where a standard foam or synthetic mattress will absorb it like a sponge. From a comfort perspective, our horsehair mattresses are like nothing else you will find anywhere globally. They provide an entirely grand level of support and comfort while regulating the temperature like no other material. Choosing a mattress that utilises horsehair will help create a micro-climate in your mattress. But getting horsehair to the point that it is ready to help make the ultimate night's sleep starts long before your mattress is hand-delivered to your bedroom.
How to make a horsehair mattress?
To manufacture a handmade horse hair mattress, we first prepare the raw material into a rope. The horsehair comes in loose, long and thick fibres, and the longer and thicker the raw material, the greater the quality.
First, the horsehair is thoroughly cleaned and passed through an electromagnetic process to eliminate impurities. The horsehair is then manually fed through the hopper. The hopper allows in a fixed amount of air to start to equally feed the fibres through where they begin to open up and form into a rope.
The second phase begins with us spinning the rope to achieve the maximum amount of twists and curls to give more spring to the horsehair and, ultimately, the mattress.
Finally, we must give the rope memory to make these twists, curls and spring constant. To do this, we heat the rope to change the structure of the horsehair for it to retain its spring once we open it back up. It is now ready to be used in our horsehair mattresses.
How long does a horsehair mattress last?
A organic horsehair mattress is a very durable with some traditional horsehair mattresses lasting up to 100 years. Our horsehair mattresses are used in combination with other natural materials, such as latex, wool, cashmere, alpaca, mohair and cotton to give more comfort, support and durability. To prove the durability of our horsehair mattresses, we provide a 30-year guarantee.
What are the benefits of horsehair mattresses?
Spring
- Each horsehair operates like a small spring, so imagine it as millions of extra micro springs that have been added to your mattress. After being compressed, horsehair returns to its original shape, so the mattress bounces back to its original form after you get out of bed.
Micro-climate system
- Horsehair provides optimum ventilation. All these micro springs operate as hollow tubes that wick moisture away and let in the fresh air. As a result, horsehair allows you to sleep in a cool, dry and comfortable environment, which prevents the growth of fungi, bacteria and dust mites.
No temperature fluctuations
- Our horsehair mattresses maintain an even temperature. As a result, all excess heat and moisture from your body are wicked away whilst you sleep. Horsehair gets rid of excessive sweat and chills. You, therefore, experience a night of deeper sleep and wake up feeling relaxed and well-rested.
Natural
- We attach great value to the use of natural products. The entire process of washing and heating horsehair is completed without the addition of any chemical substances.
Horsehair mattress allergy
- The horsehair in our mattresses is washed, heated, spun and free of any allergens. Therefore, people who suffer from allergies can experience a mattress with horsehair. In addition, we have carried out extensive testing to assure that people with allergies can have a great night's sleep without any difficulties.

What are the best horsehair mattresses?
Horsehair mattresses are the best high end mattresses. Not only do they offer the most advanced support and comfort, they also have an incredible lifespan and are well worth the investment. However, don't be deceived by blends of horsehair with other fibres such as cattle hair or polyester. It would be best to consider horsehair mattresses that are 100% natural fibre, as blended alternatives will reduce their supportive properties and durability. At Winston's Beds, we only do 100% natural horsehair.
