How Often Should You Change Your Mattress?

As the infamous saying goes, “all good things must come to an end”. Even your faithful, comfy mattress will need replacing after years of relaxing service. If it has been a loyal companion that has helped you rest and charge your batteries for a decade or so, it might be difficult to say goodbye to your mattress.

But don’t worry – at Winstons Beds we have a wide range of options that will help you find a more than worthy replacement! So, with this in mind, how often should you change your mattress to preserve an idyllic sleeping routine?

How often should you change your mattress?

The lifespan of your mattress depends on a variety of factors.

These include things such as material quality, body weight, sleeping position, environmental conditions, (lack of) cleaning and maintenance, and mattress type.

For example, with the right care, you can expect a luxury pocket spring mattress to last easily up to 15 years.

But in general terms, the average life expectancy of a mattress is between eight to ten years. The better it’s looked after and the better the quality of the mattress, the more likely it is to last longer.

At Winstons Beds, we have a range of hand-made, luxury British mattresses produced with the most refined techniques by our expert craftspeople.

Each of our mattresses comes with a generous warrantee:

  • 5-year guarantee – The Elite, The Essentials Orthopaedic
  • 10-year guarantee – The Alderley, The Pro
  • 30-year guarantee – The Ancoats, The Rochester, The Dreamer, The Shropshire, The Highland, The Sherwood, The Heritage, The Grand Luxe, The Duke, The No1, The No2, Bed Bases, Headboards

Signs you need to change your mattress

Your double mattress or king size mattress will inevitably need replacing after a while. But how do you know it is time for a change?

Here are a few aspects to keep in mind:

  • Wear and tear – One first, evident sign that your mattress needs changing is if you spot some wear and tear. This includes lumps, sagging, holes, stains, and coils that can be felt through the fabric.
  • You struggle to get comfy at night – Do you feel the springs when lying in bed at night? If so, your mattress might be on its way out. And if you wake up with numbness around your shoulders and hips, it may indeed be time to opt for a new one.
  • Back pain – Similarly, if your mattress is giving you back pains rather than restful night’s sleeps, it could be an indication that it is becoming too old. It is often difficult to determine the exact cause of back ailments. But if it persists over time, your mattress could be the blame, and it will need replacing.
  • Annoying squeaks and noises – When springs begin to squeak and make annoying noises, it probably means that the coils are worn and are struggling to offering the support they should. If that’s the case, it may be time to look for a new mattress.
  • You can feel your partner moving at night – Specific mattresses, such as pocket spring mattresses, are designed to reduce motion transfer. But as they get old, mattresses will lose that ability, meaning that you will start feeling your better half tossing and turning in bed. If it’s keeping you awake at night, you may want to buy a new mattress.
  • Your allergies have worsened – Over time, mattresses accumulate dust and allergens. Cleaning your mattress regularly will help keep your allergies at bay – but if your symptoms are gradually getting worse regardless, it could be the moment for a change.
