How Often Should You Flip Your Mattress?

One of the unwritten rules of good bed maintenance is to flip your mattress from time to time. While it may not be a habitual house chore, changing the side on which you sleep should be something to always keep in mind.

However, make sure that your mattress is designed for flipping. Some models may only have supportive and comfortable layers on one side, meaning that – if you flip it – you will end up with an ultra-firm surface that will lead to an uncomfortable night’s sleep. It may still need rotating from time to time.

If you have recently bought one of our mattresses and are unsure whether it can be flipped, don’t hesitate to get in touch. At Winstons Beds, we are always happy to help!

How often should you flip your mattress?

If your mattress is double-sided and designed to be flipped, don’t worry – you won’t have to do it on a weekly basis.

The truth is that there is no ideal schedule. But roughly speaking, most mattresses will need flipping every four to six weeks.

Flipping a mattress makes sure the materials in the filling remain evenly-spaced and keeps the mattress in good condition for longer lasting support and comfort.

That said, some specific mattress types won’t need to be flipped at all. For example, memory foam mattresses are recommended to be rotated once or twice a year, but not flipped.

While there is no fixed answer on how often you should flip your mattress, sticking to a consistent routine will help you keep it in good condition. In turn, this will benefit your sleep quality too.

Why should you flip your mattress?

Whether you own a double mattress or king-size mattress, flipping it every three to six weeks (or more) can bring a range of advantages.

In fact, maintaining and caring for your mattress is likely to increase its lifespan. Rotating it from time to time ensures it wears evenly, and extends the lifespan.

If one side of your mattress experiences more wear and tear than the other, it might become saggy and uncomfortable quicker, as the materials are not evenly spaced to support you correctly.

Overall, flipping your mattress can help preserve its support and comfort levels and is an effective way to continue enjoying energising night’s sleep.

How to flip your mattress

First, remove the bedding and strip off all sheets, covers, and pillowcases.

Ask your partner or family member for a helping hand as mattresses can be very heavy.

To flip your mattress, simply follow these steps:

  • Rotate your mattress 90 degrees so that both lateral sides are facing the head and foot of the bed. Use its handles to ease the process.
  • Lift the mattress on its edges and rest it against the head of your bed. This is the perfect time to do some cleaning and vacuuming if required.
  • Slowly lower the mattress with the underside now facing up. Then just rotate it 90 degrees again, and your task will be complete.

At Winstons Beds, we have a wide range of luxurious, hand-made British mattresses to suit everyone’s sleeping needs and preferences.
