Sleep Soundly on the Right Sized Mattress

Whether you’re moving into a new home or giving your bedroom a makeover, choosing the best mattress for your needs is an important decision. After all, you do spend a third of your life asleep! However, with so many beds on the market, each claiming to be the solution to your problems, deciding what you’re going to sleep on can be daunting.

At Winston’s, we encourage our customers to forget about jargon and fancy sales pitches and to go back to basics. This means asking yourself a series of simple questions which will set a series of parameters to help you make the right choice the first time around. If you’re looking to get the best bed for your buck, read our handy guide.

Size does matter

Before you even start thinking about pocket springs or memory foam, you need to know the size of mattress you’re going to need.

The very first thing you’ll need to think about is whether the mattress you want will fit into the room you want it in. If you have an existing bed frame, then measure up. You may already have had a mattress on it, but it’s worth double-checking just in case. If you don’t have a bed frame, then get out the tape measure and gauge the space that the mattress will take up. Don’t forget to account for how you’ll get in and out of the bed!

Once you know how much room you’ve got to play with, you’re in a position to think about the size of your new mattress. This is when there are other factors to add to the equation.

It’s all about you!

With the practical side of things taken care of, it now becomes about you and your sleeping habits.

Do you sleep alone or share your bed with a partner? How tall are you? How heavy are you? Answering questions like these will help you not only choose the size of mattress you need but also have some influence on the type you buy.

Super king size mattresses

Typical super king size mattresses measure 200cm in length and are 180cm wide.

Super king mattresses are ideal for taller people and those who share their bed but want that vital extra space. According to The National Bed Federation, the ideal situation for a super king is for two people to be able to lie, side by side, with their hands behind their heads, elbows out and still be able to not touch each other.

However, super king size mattresses aren’t just for the main occupants! If you have a young family and sunday mornings find you smothered by your children and the dog, a super king can offer all the right levels of comfort and space for your entire tribe.

King size mattresses

A standard king size mattress is 200cm long and 150cm wide.

Just like super kings, these are ideal for people on the taller side who want full-body support and not have their legs dangling over the edge of the frame. Beds of this size are also ideal for restless sleepers; there’s enough wriggle room to move around without disturbing your sleeping partner. On top of that, there’s also enough space to comfortably accommodate a small child – particularly useful if they’ve suffered from a nightmare at 3am!

The double mattress

Typically measuring 190cm by 135cm, a double mattress does exactly what it says on the tin and provides sleeping space for two adults.

Again, because of their length, they can cheerfully accommodate those with longer legs and are ideal for bedrooms where space is at a premium. Double beds tend to be favoured by couples without children, as there’s not much room left over once the main occupants are tucked in. However, they’re also ideal for single people who want that feeling of luxury.

The small double mattress

Small double mattresses are really designed for one person who likes the extra space but can accommodate two at a push.

At 190cm in length, they’re better suited to people of average height and the 120cm width makes them a great choice for smaller bedrooms. These mattresses come into their own when sat on top of a divan frame with drawers, offering extra storage.

The single mattress

With dimensions of 190cm by 90cm, these are designed for one person only.

They make excellent beds for children, as their length can accommodate growth spurts and restless legs. Single mattresses are ideal for standard-sized bedrooms and, like their larger counterparts, they can offer additional storage if they’re set on a divan or ottoman base.

Zip & link mattress siizes

Zip and Link mattresses are the best solutions for partners who are significantly different in weight, or if you want to be able to divide your mattress for when guests visit.

Zip and Links are also a much easier option when it comes to turning your mattress. At Winston’s, we do a king-size zip mattress and link and a super king-size zip and link mattress.

  • King size zip and link 5’x 6’6 (Each half measuring 2’6 x 6’6)
  • Super-size zip and link 6′ x 6’6 ″ (Each half measuring 3’0 x 6’6)

What type of mattress is best?

While the material used to make your mattress will impact on the price, you should also take into account what you need for a good night’s rest.

  • Latex is a great material, particularly for those who are sensitive to neck and back pain. Made from the sap of the para rubber tree, latex mattresses offer wraparound comfort and excellent support. Because we use patented 3d pocket springs, moving around in the bed should offer minimal disturbance to anyone else lying in the bed. Latex mattresses are also hypo-allergenic, making them a great choice for those with allergies or respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD.
  • Pocket spring mattresses consist of springs individually held in fabric cases and sealed within a comfortable surround. These offer outstanding support and are widely used by those who suffer from back pain. All the pressure points, such as the elbows, knees and ankles, are supported and the springs are resistant enough to accommodate sleepers carrying a little extra weight. There’s no compromise on comfort, ensuring that your journey to the Land of Nod is as relaxing as possible.
  • If your idea of the perfect night’s rest is one of comfort and a mattress that seems to swallow you up, check out pillow-top mattresses. Boasting an extra layer of super-soft padding, they offer hotel-standard luxury, without having to book a room! In addition, the extra layer doesn’t hold on to heat, so you won’t find yourself having to throw back the covers in the middle of the night. Pillow top mattresses also offer excellent weight distribution so you’ll get all-over body support without having to compromise on the feeling of sleeping on something special.
