Micro springs overshadowed: Natural fibres assert dominance!
Micro springs, despite being widely used, are significantly inferior to natural fillings in mattresses, particularly when one considers the key factors that contribute to a comfortable and long-lasting sleeping surface. There are numerous reasons why natural fillings reign supreme over micro springs.
Natural fillings provide an unrivalled level of support and comfort. Materials such as wool, cotton and horsehair are adept at moulding to the body’s contours. They provide the pressure relief necessary for a comfortable sleep, reducing the likelihood of aches and discomfort. Micro springs, on the other hand, cannot offer this level of personalised support. Their response to body weight and shape is coarse, leading to potential discomfort and a substandard sleep quality.
When it comes to durability and longevity, natural fillings stand far ahead of micro springs. Although micro springs may initially seem resilient, they are prone to losing their supportive qualities over time. The result is a mattress that quickly becomes saggy and uncomfortable. Conversely, natural fillings maintain their supportive and comfortable properties for a far longer period, ensuring the longevity of the mattress.
One of the great virtues of natural fillings is their breathability and temperature regulation. Fillings such as wool and coir are excellent at wicking away moisture and help maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature throughout the night. In contrast, whilst micro springs permit some airflow, they simply cannot compete with the superior breathability and temperature regulating abilities of natural fibres.
An often-overlooked factor is noise. Over time, the repeated compression and expansion of micro springs can lead to a creaking noise. This noise can disrupt sleep and prove irritating. Natural fillings, in contrast, offer a silent night’s sleep, not contributing to any noise within the mattress.
Now, there is no denying that micro springs are cheaper to manufacture and therefore, for mattress manufacturers, they are a more cost-effective option. However, this apparent benefit for the manufacturer doesn’t equate to better value for the customer. The limitations of micro springs in terms of comfort, support, durability and breathability mean that mattresses filled predominantly with micro springs offer subpar quality. While manufacturers can produce these mattresses more cheaply and therefore make larger profits, it’s the customers who lose out by receiving an inferior product.
In contrast, while natural fillings are indeed more expensive, a mattress made with a higher GSM of natural fillings offers superior comfort, support, breathability and durability. The result is a high-quality mattress that stands the test of time and provides the sleeper with a great night’s sleep, every night. It’s clear that the additional investment in natural fillings results in a mattress that not only feels more luxurious but also offers real, tangible benefits to the sleeper.
So, while micro springs may be good for the manufacturer’s bottom line, when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, natural fillings are unequivocally the superior choice.
